By logic, one understands essentially: not an axiomatic system, because it should not be based on assumptions. Or: there should not be logical axioms & logical methods of inference.
§
‘From its contrary, a contradiction can be derived.’ – Well, perhaps he is not doing anything here.
§
1[3] &2[1]
Avoiding the contradiction is a mathematical method. It leads to usable formations, & “usable” is here almost as indeterminate as “having a point.” But if the function of a sentence is completely indeterminate, why shouldn’t it be a contradiction? Why should a mathematician, in principle, make the sign of the cross against every contradiction? (One could say: don’t be afraid, it doesn’t bite!)
§
Logic could very well be conducted with contradictions; we would then have learned to use the sentences of logic differently. And what if, when confronted with such a (true) contradiction, one asked: is it true or is it false? –
§
2[3]436 Der Satz 436 dieses Buches ist nicht beweisbar.
436 Sentence 436 of this book is not provable.
§
2[4] &3[1]
437 This must be true. For if it were false, then No. 436 would be provable & therefore true (a contradiction), & if 436 were provable, then 436 would be false. (This shows how easy it is to say something true.) If this rule here leads you to such a silly game, then do not apply it here.

(In philosophy, a question can be solved by asking 100 other questions.)
§
(But mathematics is not symbolic logic; rather, the latter is a small part of mathematics. A part in which, through a misunderstanding, one believed one could see the ‘foundation of mathematics.’)

The interest in a magician’s trick can be of very different kinds. Children are delighted by the strange phenomenon that coffee can be brewed in a hat, & the hat remains undamaged. But the same phenomenon could also have a very different interest: it could be very important to us to show people how easily & in what way such a deceptive appearance comes about; this could be extremely important to us, & therefore also the trick that demonstrates this.
